"For her first exhibition in Venice, Violaine Vieillefond wanted to present an installation in one of Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello's main rooms, la Sala della Musica, and its 18th century frescoes. Fascinated by painting and fluid mechanics, most of all
water, Violaine Vieillefond shows us that she has a particular talent for bringing her universe into resonance in spaces, the characteristics of which can sometimes seem complicated for contemporary art. Here, in this magnificent and classic room sufficient in itself, Violaine unfolds her screens to create a fluid way within the room while exploiting its particularities. This road, which the visitor is invited to follow, takes us on a path that can echo that of the gondoliers’ crisscrossing the canals in the middle of this landscape where water and heritage merge. Letting his/her mind escape, the visitor finally faces a wall made up of distorting mirrors bringing together all the elements of the room, from the oldest to the most contemporary, into a new unity of shapes, styles, colors and periods."

By Claudia Meschini
ART. VENICE

The Music Room of the Albrizzi-Capello Palace (Cannaregio 4118), headquarters of the ACIT, Italian-German Cultural Association, houses «L'oro dell'acqua», the first solo exhibition in Venice by the French artist Violaine Vieillefond, an exhibition offering a subtle dialogue with the frescoes and stuccoes of the eighteenth century that decorate the walls and ceilings of the Room. The exhibition presents large-scale triptychs from Violaine Vieillefond’s latest paintings. The artist invites us to take a glance at her favorite theme, water, a symbol deeply linked to sea travelss, migrations, encounters with foreigners, ecoloical disasters as well as to the unknown, imaginary or unconscious territories. In the paintings of Vieillefond, the blue color predominates, in contrast with the light of gold, the two shades being inspired by the moasaics of the Serenissima, when Venice, proud of its maritime power, was flooded with gold, the decorative gold par excellence, whose illustrious example is of course Saint Mark’s Basilica. In Vieillefond’s superb triptychs arranged in folding screens, also predominate the shades of the azure that harmonize with gold: the famous Venetian blue of the lagoon that blends with the green and reflects the blue of the sky. “Here, gold expresses the experience and emergence of life that is born of water (L’oro dell’acqua), similar to a resurrection,” explains Nevia Capello, ACIT’s President. The last painting of the series is a direct tribute to the «Great Kanagawa Wave» of Hokusai, where gold recedes in the background and blue is highlighted with the first synthetic pigment: the Prussian blue which had already invaded the Venetian skies of Antonio Canaletto. Created in collaboration with Itsliquid Group, Galerie Faure Beaulieu in Paris and the Italian Goethe Insitut, the exhibition organized by Luca Curci is to be seen until July 8th, from Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

L’ORO DELL' ACQUA, presented by Itsliquid Group, in collaboration with ACIT Venice – Italian-German Association / Goethe Institut, SEE Galerie and Galerie Faure Beaulieu, Paris, is the first solo exhibition of French artist Violaine Viellefond in Venice.

In a subtile dialogue with the beautiful 18th century frescos decorating the walls and ceilings of Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello’s Sala della Musica exceptionnally arranged for this occasion, and collateral to a National Pavilion of the 60th Biennale of Art, the exhibition will feature a unique display of large scale triptych folding screens of her most recent paintings. The artist invites us to cast a new glance at her favorite subject, Water, at once a pictorial medium, a symbol and resource in the very heart of our contemporary issues - deeply connected with sea travels, migrations, foreign encounters, hazards, unknown, imaginary or unconscious territories.  “First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners - they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always, truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner” (Adriano Pedrosa, curator for the 2024 Biennale of Art).

UTOPIA NOW

Summer is here, Parisians are about to leave on vacation, some of them heading to the seaside, others planning to attend festivals and exhibitions. Are you dreaming of calm and idleness ? Colors and joie de vivre ? Simplicity and poetry ? At See Galerie, we caught some sunrays in order to imagine a unique show as vitaminized as a cocktail. UTOPIA NOW invites you to discover imaginary lands,a fictive world developped around clues sown by the invited artists and guiding us through their own universes. An experience full of emotions, the atmosphere of UTOPIA NOW perhaps leads us towards the recklessness of a shared happiness, the hope of new beginnings ?

Born in 1970, lives and works in Paris.
Resulting from fluid movements and tied to liquids properties, Violaine Vieillefond’s creations carry an emotional dimension, which rocks , overwhelms, or erases. She works on various surfaces, mostly on free canvases that she lays on the floor. As they’re partially or entirely covered with water, the artist drops the colors and the artworks appear under the unpredictable trajectories of the flows. To her, the original material is liquid and “is the matrix where the initial incident is going to lead to a series of needs’’.

In the Metamorphoses series, red moving shapes spring from the emptiness and immerse us into a feminine and fragile, both organic and floral, uterine and vegetal. The artist takes us inside the body and the cells, like at the origin of movement and life. By imitating Nature, the series elaborated by the artist pass through many cycles. In the Colors of Linen, Violaine Vieillefond explores seasonal transitions on original folding screens, in reference to the Japanese folding screens depicting admiration of Nature and beauty. Spring and Summer, such as colors explosions, unfold thanks to the artist’s gesture and the movement of the fluids.

Dance of Fluids

Water is her elusive universe, the moving matter which endows her works with an infinity of nuances. Violaine Viellefond spreads down  colour upon it  then follows its contours and meanders, hardly guiding them. A sensation of space,  a soft emotion, almost  lunar , surrounded by mystery.

By Laurence de Calan

Perhaps because as a child she often admired Monet's Nympheas (Water Lilies) at the Marmottan Museum where her mother who taught art history and comparative literature often took her, Violaine made water her prime inspiration. In California she discovered Abstract Expressionism, large canvases and photography Then having a double training, first scientific like her  father who was an engineer, and in Art History and Painting under the tuition of Martin Bissière and Martin Lacomme Professors at the Beaux Arts of Paris, her fascination for coloured fluids in movement, for the micro macro cosmic worlds and for he metamorphoses of living. In her studio outside Paris , the artist submerges her free canvases lying on the floor with water then with colours , blue but also red, black and white, letting them mix freely, or spread or keep still. "I guide the pictorial matter towards certain forms but everything goes quickly and moves towards all directions, just as in life, and one cannot control everything!". If indeed she chooses acrylic on canvas for her series : "Water Canvases", "Lights of Foam", "Shades of Blue", "The paths of Water", "Hazard and necessity", the artist paints or imprints photographs on more original supports: plexiglas for The Garden of Waterfalls, or The Suspended Fountain, Petri boxes  The Ballad of the Water Lily, pieces of dead leaves for Autumn Blues, brossé aluminium Dibond for Monuments and qua Alta,  ceramics for Azuleros….Exhibited in France- the whole summer at the See Galerie in Paris, -  in Japan, in New York, Brussels and Moscow, the artist is also the author of beautiful books  Water Canvases  , Blue Gold, On Water and Men, she has a passion for Venice, its deep waters with unique reflections. After her next exhibition, due at the Galerie Etienne de Causans from September 12 to 16, and the publication of NINFAE, a collection in four volumes of her ephemeral draperies in water right in the middle of nature, she will repair to Venice to work on aquatic videos and photo graphs. And she will continue , at a time when our source of life  tends to become scarce and our  oceans to overflow, to interrogate the blue planet.

An aquatic universe filled with emotion and poetry.

BLACK IS BACK

BLACK

This is the zone where landmarks have vanished leaving room for all kinds of possibilities. Engulfed in darkness or absorbed in light, the black works do not reveal themselves at first sight. Attracted by their mysterious lack of visibility, one must come closer to them to detect the details and immerge into them to feel the vibrations. Darkness eventually leaves room for light which in this play of shadows sketches the forms and reveals the scale of the outlines. Colour then invites itself to spend a moment of intimacy so as to capture the matter and energy needed in the present gesture.
The black matter is now able to  reveal the quintessence of its density and elegance. It is a form of Absolute, bringing us close to the idea of the Infinite or of nothingness, leading us to a sort of introspection.
Almost ten years after BLACK IS BACK, the exhibition imagined by Arnaud Faure Beaulieu having taken place in the loft of the artist Aberto Sorbelli in Paris, it is now in the See Galerie that the second chapter of the event takes place. This  is how artists uch as Quentin Derouet, Frederic Galliano, Eva Hild, David Nash, Grégoire Scalabre, Vladimir Skoda, Alberto Sorbelli and Violaine Vieillefond come together. The exhibition BLACK IS BACK also offers an opportunity to show visitors a more conceptual experience of art. Indeed, being faithful to their performative approach, Quentin Derouet invites us to a sensorial and tasty face to face encounter, whereas Alberto Sorbelli suggests the art collector to interact with him via a notebook.

Violaine was born in 1970 and works in Paris and Vitry-sur-Seine.

Her creations, stemming from the movement of fluids and the metamorphosis of the element, take on an emotional dimension, now gentle , now submerging and destroying. She works on different supports, mostly on free canvases she always spreads on the floor. Once these are   completely covered with water, the artist adds  colours and the work takes shape according to the unpredictable routes of the flows.

Within the frame of this exhibition, Violaine Vieillefond fills the space with an installation making water, the architecture of the place and its stones,  converse. The series called Water Canvases takes us on a journey across shades of blue , pink and black. These works call up the glimmering surfaces of aquatic spaces but at the same time they plunge us  into the very depths of gloomy, opaque waters. The journey, exploring the stormy shades of grey up to the ominous black  in the pictures of the series. Shadows of Forms, may appear as a fall into the abyss of the oceans  but also into the dark depths of the soul. But, faithful to the standpoint of Soulages, the artist is less keen on seeing darkness than light. Light upon dark works  eventually bestows life upon the forms of water, its dark shades appearing as if  weightless, ready to  bring us back  to light.

PREVIEW

"Water", as the title of the present exhibition indicates, first and foremost brings to the fore the completely different working approaches and a selection of the specific relationships connected to this fluid. If indeed water can be a subject in itself, it may also be a vector, a tool, a process, even a way to highlight the work. This explains why all the different artists forming a group in this exhibition have all  this element (water) in common as a the fundamental basis of their work or punctually on a specific series. Thus, the works presented here, which every way you look at them, are all basically different: Water as a work tool with Jo Lewis, as a time process with Albane Hupin, as drops analyzed and captured on photographs with Capucine Vandebrouck, as a smooth and fluent prop in Arrnaud's Pfeffer's realisations, as strange ecological observations of sea areas with Markus Hoffman, as transpositions of unlimited aquatic surfaces with Violaine Vieillefond, or a melancholy emotional and meditative subject with Yu Zhuo, and a philosophical experiment in the manner of Leibnitz with Frederic Galliano. These various expressions and plastic forms, thus connected to this fluid, allow us to reinvent new approaches.

Violaine was born in 1970 and works in Paris and Vitry-sur-Seine.

Her creations, stemming from the movement of fluids and the metamorphosis of the element water, takes on an emotional dimension, now gentle, now submerging and destroying. She works on different supports, mostly on free canvases she always spreads on the floor. Once these are completely covered with water, the artist adds colours and the work takes shape according to the unpredictable routes of the flows. Violaine's Water Canvases call up at once the glimmering surfaces of aquatic areas and the  more mysterious and gloomy submarine depths. Although the origin of water is transparency, the artist more often than not resorts to blue as a reference to the azure of the sky reflecting on water. Her works are large areas where sky and sea merge in their respective immensity.

Within the frame of this exhibition, Violaine Vieillefond fills the space with an installation making water, the architecture of the place and its stones, converse.  A more dramatic occurrence steps into her works: that of a sea which is always on the move with its floods and tides, on which our civilisations depend. The Acqua Alta series is a poetic reflexion on these movements which are out of control, the mysteries of engulfed cities and of their walls which disappear under the rising waters.
